Internet Terms
- client
- the requesting program or user in a client/server relationship
- server
- a program that awaits and fulfills requests from client programs
on the same computer or on other computers
- packet
- the unit of data that is routed between an origin and a
destination on the Internet or any other packet-switched network
(any file sent over a packet-switched network is broken up into
packets which are sent separately to the destination)
- LAN (local area network)
- a group of computers and associated devices (such as printers) that
are connected so that they can share resources; usually within a
building or even within one room
- IP (internet protocol)
- the method by which data is sent from one computer to another
on the Internet
- IP address
- a unique number assigned to each computer connected to
the Internet, used by computers to direct messages to each other
- domain name
- a unique name assigned to a computer connected to the Internet,
used by humans instead of IP addresses; domain names have multiple
parts, separated by dots (.), the last of which is one of a specific
set of top level domains
- top level domain
- the last part of the domain name that identifies either the type
of organization which owns the computer (such as .com, .edu, .gov) or
the country in which the computer is located (such as .jp, .it, .ve)
- URL (uniform resource locator)
- the unique address for a resource (file containing a web page,
image, sound, video, or program) which is accessible through the Internet
- TCP (transmission control protocol)
- works along with IP to deliver data on the Internet
- WWW (world wide web)
- the collection of documents available on the Internet that can
be viewed using a web browser
- ftp (file transmission protocol)
- the method used to copy files from one computer on the Internet
to another
- telnet
- the method that allows a user on one computer to execute commands
on another computer over the Internet
- router
- a device or software that determines the next network point
to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination
(a router is connected to at least two networks and decides
which way to send each packet based on the current state of each network)
- firewall
- a set of related programs, located at a network gateway,
that protects the resources of a private network from users of the
Internet
