Course Objectives

This course defines computers and computer applications and their use in business, industry, and government. Students completing this course will be computer fluent. Students will understand the capabilities and limitations of computers and know how to effectively use them to accomplish personal and work-related tasks. In addition, students will understand computers and their ethical, legal, and societal implications. Topics include the history of computers, hardware components of a computer system, software programs, terminology, use of the Internet, privacy of information, ethical behavior, and the influence of computers on people and society. Hands-on experience includes: using a Windows operating system, a word processor, designing and implementing spreadsheets, designing and implementing a database, and producing presentations. This course is recommended for anyone who will be involved with computers and the use of computer application software.

Campus Cruiser

Campus Cruiser is where you will find all course materials that come from me: handouts, assignments, and reference material (like the class PowerPoints). Perhaps most important, you will find our syllabus there, so you can keep track of scheduled topics and assignments.

Accomodations

If you need accomodations due to a disability, please contact the Counseling and Career Services Department, Edison Hall Room 100, 732-906-2546.

Hardware and Software

You need a desktop or laptop PC for this course. A tablet or netbook is not sufficient. You may be able to complete some assignments on this type of device but you may not be able to complete all the requirements of all assignments. If you have a Mac you may not be able to complete the requirements of all assignments, so you will also need access to a PC. A Microsoft Surface Pro is fine, but no other tablets. The Computer Science Department has a lab on campus, in room IRC115, that is open from 9AM to 10PM Monday through Friday during the time of our class. You may use this lab; bring your student id with you to the lab. You need Microsoft Office 2013. If you have an older version of Office you may not be able to complete the requirements of all assignments. I will provide a handout on Office 2013 with information on options for getting Office 2013.

MOIP/SimNet Data Files

When you work on a SimBook, you will encounter sections called "Pause and Practice". Each of these sections contains step-by-step instructions to help you practice the skills from the preceding section(s) of the SimBook. Often, you will need to open a document and make changes to it. When you are directed to open a file, you can find it in Shared Files.

Shared Files contains a folder called "MOIP Data Files". Within this folder you will find a folder for each application. These application folders contain a folder for each chapter we are covering. Within the chapter folders you will find the documents you need.

Computer Support

If you have a problem with Campus Cruiser: You can email helpdesk@middlesexcc.edu or click on the question mark icon in the upper right corner of the Campus Cruiser window. If you don't know your Campus Cruiser password you must go to the Registrar in Chambers Hall with a valid picture ID. Due to federal privacy regulations you cannot get your password over the phone.

If you have a problem with SimNet or Connect: At http://mpss.mhhe.com/ you will find links to email or chat with tech support. You can also call 800-331-5094.

Computer Labs

The Computer Science Department has an open lab where you can work on your assignments. The lab is in IRC115 and is open Monday-Friday, 9AM-10PM. Bring your student id to get entry to the lab.

Honesty Policy

Students are expected to do all lab work and homework assignments individually. Under no circumstances may a student share their work with another student or use work completed by another individual. A student has cheated if he or she has shared a lab or copied a lab, shared homework answers or copied homework answers, shared or copied test answers, or used any unauthorized sources of information during a quiz or exam. A grade of zero will be earned on any lab, homework, exam, or quiz if cheating was involved. Cheating could also lead to the final grade being lowered by one grade or lead to an "F" for the course depending on the circumstances.

Every student suspected of academic dishonesty will be reported under the Code of Student Conduct.

Grading Criteria

Grades will be based on the following breakdown:

23% UIT Chapter Quizzes (lowest grade dropped)
22% UIT Tests
23% MOIP MS Office Exams (lowest grade dropped)
22% MOIP MS Office Projects
10% Research Project

Final letter grades will be calculated as follows:

  A 93 - 100 (all assignments must be completed)
  A- 90 - 92
  B+ 87 - 89
  B 83 - 86
  B- 80 - 82
  C+ 77 - 80
  C 70 - 76
